Sotheby's Brilliant & Black African-American Designer Jewellery Show in London: The Age of Enlightenment

Sep 27, 2022

From September 22nd to October 2nd, Sotheby's London is holding the second edition of African American Designer Jewelry Exhibition, "Brilliant & Black: The Age of Enlightenment", which presents 70 pieces of jewelry by African American designers under the theme of "Age of Enlightenment". Showcasing the imagination, understanding and craftsmanship of African artists in jewelry creation.

The exhibition brings together 25 African-American designers8 of whom are first-time invitees, each of whom is asked to create a new piece of jewelry, where you can see the reinterpretation of traditional African totems, cultural symbolsanimal images full of wild charm, modern geometric styles, and unique poetic starry sky reverie

Most notable is an Owl Cuff owl gold bracelet by African-American designer Lauren Harwell Godfrey, which is cleverly shaped by the designer in geometric shapescolored sapphires for vibrant life, and two yellow diamonds in the eyes. The walls of the bracelet transform into the open wings of an owl, and the gold is carved with delicate layered feathers like goose down.

Nigerian designer Shola Branson's Cartouche diamond ring is inspired by the "Cartouche" in Egyptian hieroglyphs, with a narrow band set of brown and champagne diamonds of different sizes that are both retro and modern.
