Stainless Steel Jewelry FAQ
Answers to Your Most Common Questions
The Questions We Hear Every Day
After 25 years in the stainless steel jewelry business, we've heard just about every question you can imagine. Some are simple, some are surprising, and a few come up so often that we decided to put all the answers in one place.
This guide covers the questions our wholesale customers ask most frequently, from the basics ("Will stainless steel turn my skin green?") to the more specific ("What's the difference between PVD gold and gold plating?"). If you're new to stainless steel jewelry, or if you're a retailer looking for answers to share with your own customers, this is the place to start.
We've organized the questions by category so you can find what you're looking for quickly. Every answer is based on real experience selling millions of pieces of stainless steel jewelry to customers in over 50 countries.

Material and Quality Questions
Will stainless steel jewelry turn my skin green?
No, quality 316L stainless steel will not turn your skin green. The green discoloration people sometimes get from jewelry is caused by copper or other base metals reacting with skin oils and sweat. 316L stainless steel contains no copper in contact with the skin, and it's highly corrosion-resistant. That said, very cheap stainless steel jewelry (201 grade, or poorly plated pieces) can sometimes cause discoloration. Always buy from a supplier who uses 316L surgical-grade stainless steel and quality PVD plating. At Showfay, every piece is made from 316L stainless steel, and we've never had a customer report green skin from our jewelry.
Is stainless steel jewelry hypoallergenic?
Yes, 316L stainless steel is one of the most hypoallergenic metals available for jewelry. It's the same material used in surgical implants and medical equipment. The nickel content in 316L is locked into the metal's molecular structure and doesn't leach out in normal wear. This makes it safe for people with nickel allergies, which affect about 10-15% of the population. If you or your customers have sensitive skin, 316L stainless steel is one of the safest choices available, alongside titanium and solid gold.
What's the difference between 316L and regular stainless steel?
316L is a specific grade of stainless steel known as "surgical grade" or "marine grade." The "L" stands for low carbon, which makes the metal more resistant to corrosion and easier to weld. 316L contains molybdenum, an element that adds extra corrosion resistance, especially against saltwater and chlorine. Cheaper stainless steel jewelry often uses 201 grade, which has less chromium and more manganese. 201 is more prone to corrosion and can cause skin reactions in some people. For jewelry that lasts, always look for 316L.
What is PVD gold plating, and is it better than regular gold plating?
PVD stands for Physical Vapor Deposition. It's a process where gold particles are vaporized in a vacuum chamber and bonded to the stainless steel surface at the molecular level. This creates a bond that's much stronger than traditional electroplating. PVD gold plating is 5-10 times more durable than regular gold plating. It won't chip, flake, or rub off with normal wear. Traditional gold plating can wear off in weeks or months with regular use, while PVD plating lasts for years. The tradeoff is that PVD is more expensive to produce, but the durability makes it worth it for quality jewelry.
Care and Maintenance Questions
Can I wear stainless steel jewelry in the shower or swimming pool?
Yes, you can wear 316L stainless steel jewelry in the shower, and it's fine for swimming in pools and even the ocean. The stainless steel itself won't rust, tarnish, or corrode from water exposure. However, there are a few caveats. PVD gold and rose gold finishes can be affected by harsh chemicals like chlorine in high concentrations, so it's a good idea to rinse your jewelry after swimming in a heavily chlorinated pool. Also, lotions, perfumes, and hairspray can build up on the surface and make the jewelry look dull over time. A quick rinse with water and a wipe with a soft cloth is enough to keep it looking new.
How do I clean stainless steel jewelry?
Cleaning stainless steel jewelry is simple. Mix a few drops of mild dish soap with warm water, dip a soft cloth or toothbrush in the solution, and gently scrub the jewelry. Rinse with clean water and dry thoroughly with a soft cloth. For extra shine, you can use a jewelry polishing cloth (the kind with a polishing compound embedded in the fabric). Avoid using harsh chemicals like bleach, ammonia, or abrasive cleaners, as these can damage the PVD finish. For jewelry with CZ stones, avoid soaking it for long periods, as water can get under the stone settings and loosen the glue over time.
Does stainless steel jewelry tarnish?
No, stainless steel does not tarnish. Tarnish is a chemical reaction that affects silver, copper, and brass when they react with sulfur in the air. Stainless steel contains chromium, which forms a protective oxide layer on the surface that prevents tarnishing and corrosion. This is one of the biggest advantages of stainless steel over silver jewelry, which requires regular polishing to remove tarnish. The only thing that can make stainless steel look dull is a buildup of body oils, lotions, and dirt, which is easily removed with soap and water.
How long does stainless steel jewelry last?
With proper care, stainless steel jewelry can last for decades. The metal itself is virtually indestructible under normal wear conditions. It won't rust, tarnish, or corrode. The PVD gold or rose gold finish can last 3-5 years or more with regular wear, and even longer with occasional care. CZ stones can loosen over time if the jewelry is subjected to heavy impact, but this is rare with normal wear. Many of our wholesale customers have customers who have been wearing the same stainless steel necklace or bracelet for 5-10 years and it still looks great. Compare that to fashion jewelry that falls apart in months, and you can see why stainless steel is such a smart choice.
Buying and Sizing Questions
How do I find my ring size?
The most accurate way is to visit a jewelry store and have them measure your finger with a professional ring sizer. If that's not possible, you can measure at home: wrap a thin strip of paper around your finger, mark where it overlaps, and measure the length in millimeters. Then compare to a ring size chart. Keep in mind that fingers change size throughout the day, and in hot weather. Measure at the end of the day when your fingers are at their largest. For wide bands (6mm or more), go up half a size, as wide bands fit tighter. If you're between sizes, always go with the larger size, a slightly loose ring is more comfortable than a tight one.
What necklace length should I buy?
The most popular necklace length for women is 18 inches, which sits at the base of the neck. 16 inches is a choker length that sits higher on the neck. 20-24 inches is a longer length that works well for layering and for wearing over sweaters. For men, 20-24 inches is the standard range, with 22 inches being the most popular. If you're buying a gift and aren't sure of the size, 18 inches for women and 22 inches for men are safe choices. Necklaces with extension chains (2-3 inches of extra chain) are even better, as they let the wearer adjust the length to their preference.
Is stainless steel jewelry good for sensitive skin?
Yes, this is one of the biggest reasons people choose stainless steel jewelry. 316L stainless steel is hypoallergenic and safe for even the most sensitive skin. It's the same material used in surgical implants, so it's designed to be biocompatible. If you've ever had a reaction to cheap fashion jewelry (redness, itching, green skin), switching to 316L stainless steel will likely solve the problem. The only exception is people with extremely rare chromium or molybdenum allergies, which affect less than 1% of the population. For almost everyone, stainless steel is completely safe.

Wholesale and Business Questions
What's the minimum order quantity for wholesale?
At Showfay, our minimum order is $150, and you can mix and match any styles you want. There's no per-style minimum, so you can order 1 piece of 150 different styles, or 50 pieces of 3 styles, whatever works for your business. This low MOQ makes it easy for new businesses to test the market without risking a lot of money. Many of our customers start with a $200-$300 first order to test which styles sell, then reorder their best sellers in larger quantities.
How much markup should I put on stainless steel jewelry?
The standard markup for stainless steel jewelry is 4-6 times the wholesale cost. A necklace that costs you $3 wholesale should retail for $15-$20. A $5 bracelet should retail for $25-$30. This might sound like a lot, but remember that you need to cover packaging, shipping, platform fees (12-15% on Etsy and Amazon), payment processing, marketing, and your time. A 4x markup is the minimum to run a profitable business. Stores that underprice their jewelry usually end up quitting because they're working for free. Price your jewelry for profit, not just to cover costs.
How do I know the quality is good before I order?
The best way is to order samples first. At Showfay, you can order individual pieces at sample prices to check the quality before placing a larger order. Look for these quality indicators: smooth edges with no sharp spots, secure stone settings, sturdy clasps, even and consistent PVD plating, and proper weight (cheap jewelry feels flimsy and light). We also offer a quality guarantee, if you receive a defective piece, we'll replace it free of charge. After 25 years in business, we've refined our quality control process to catch defects before they ship.
Can I get custom or private label jewelry?
Yes, we offer OEM and ODM services for customers who want custom designs or private label packaging. For custom designs, we typically require a minimum order of 100-300 pieces per style, depending on the complexity. For private label (your logo on the packaging or engraved on the jewelry), the minimum is lower, usually 50-100 pieces. Custom packaging (jewelry boxes with your logo) is available with minimums starting at 500 boxes. If you're just starting out, we recommend building your brand with our existing styles first, then adding custom pieces once you have consistent sales volume.
- Material: Always choose 316L surgical-grade stainless steel. Avoid 201 grade.
- Plating: PVD is 5-10x more durable than electroplating. Worth the extra cost.
- Care: Soap and water is all you need. No special cleaners required.
- Sizing: When in doubt, go larger. Slightly loose beats too tight.
- Markup: 4-6x wholesale is standard. Don't underprice your work.
- Quality check: Order samples first. Check edges, clasps, stones, and plating.
